Remember that you can always fit the mattress in a "U" shape inside your SUV, therefore reducing the width. The same could be done for the length, therefore giving some extra space for the fitting.

Find below a chart with the different sizes:

Size of your SUV

Depending on the type of SUV you drive your chances of fitting a mattress might vary, compact or crossover SUVs are not going to make it, while a midsize and full-size SUV will more likely manage to do so.

Now, full-size SUVs are safe, they can easily fit a full size mattress, and some could even fit a king size, some of the most popular full-size SUVs are the GMC Yukon XL, the Cadillac Escalade ESV, the BMW X7, and the Toyota Sequoia. As you see, they share similar qualities, they are exceptionally long, wide; have three rows, and a large trunk.

For the mid-size SUVs things get trickier, as some would be able to fit it, while others not. For example, the Ford Explorer and the Toyota Highlander will manage to fit it, while the Chevrolet Blazer and the Nissan Rogue, won't be able to do so.

Compact and crossover SUVs won't be able to fit them as they aren't made for carrying such big items, some popular compact SUVs are the Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV4, and the Ford Escape.

But wait, there is still some hope

Many mattresses have good flexibility, which allows you to effectively bend them, therefore, enabling you to fit them in narrower spaces. If your mattress has decent flexibility it could fit in most mid size SUVs, or even in some compact SUVs.

Compressed Mattresses are a solution

Some manufacturers offer the mattresses in a compressed form, where they remove the air inside so it shrinks. A compressed mattress is easy to handle and can be transported by the smallest SUVs, and even by sedans. So it's a good idea to ask for this option when buying a new mattress.

Another solution could be carrying it on the roof

Most Midsize SUVs can easily fit a full size mattress on their roofs. Just make sure it's properly tied since having an item not properly secured in your automobile roof is illegal and can be fined.

Some compact and crossover SUVs might be able to carry them on their roofs, a big problem can be the design, as many crossovers are made in a coupé form, which makes it harder. A square-shaped crossover SUV will find less difficulty.

The bottom line – You can fit a full size mattress in an SUV

Before attempting to fit the mattress, fold down the back seats, pull the front seats as much as comfortably possible, and grab a tape measure to check the dimensions. If it can almost fit inside, you will be fine as you can bend the mattress a bit. That's the good thing about the mattress, its flexibility, as something like a dishwasher would be harder to fit properly in an SUV.

If nothing works, consider shipping the mattress from the store, as it's inexpensive and trouble-free.
